My brother-in-law Fr John Collins  then an Army Padre (Catholic) based at Burham and later Police Chaplain (d 6 Sep 2003) according to the family tradition flew to the ice to assist pastorally immediately following the disaster. He was of course greatly affected by this mission.

We had hoped he was eligible for the Medal but I am having difficulty with service verification: his Church has no specific record, neither has the Army (base records) nor the Police.

I am hoping to get a lead for some lin eof enquiry or make contact with someone who may have met or worked with him there.

I would be greatful if anyone with any ideas or information could make contact.

There is a post on here that has the exact URL to get to the appropriate page on the NZDF medals site.

However, if you have his service number, the Army or NZDF HQ would be more able to help. Was he serving at the time, or had he just been confirmed (orwhatever the correct word is for a padre)?

On behalf of all those who lost a loved one (not least on behalf of my family who lost a beloved father/grandfather) may I extend our deepest thanks for the efforts of your brother in law and all those like him who had to partake in such a terrible disaster.
