CVR tape  Modified By comms services on 29/06/2009 2:51:01 am

Air NZ has their copy of the original CVR recording in the Head office CEO safe.

It is a 8 inch reel of quarter inch tape able to be played on an 8 track tape recorder.

APLA needs to pressure the present  NZ CEO to release the tape to allow others to hear it in a 'controlled way'.

We had been asked by Ian Diamond engng manager and CEO to verify that the tape contained the actual CVR, well it does and its chilling.. Kiwis have a right to hear the actual recording after all this time. This is true, the airline copy of the tape exists in Air NZ CEO safe.. over to ALPA...

I disagree.  The CVR technology was developed for one sole purpose - to assist in investigations where the crew themselves couldn't - and this occurred.  There is no need for these tapes to go any further.

I'd oppose any moves to release these to the general public.

The  CVR  tape  is  not  easy  to understand / interpret  but  the  Accident Inspector's  report  [ seems  to have  been  able  to  interpret  the   Flight Deck  inter-comments  OK .  The  evidence  from  that    shows  the  reality  of   the  Flight deck  crew's  actions  and  the  decisions.  The  Flight  Engineer,  Gordon  Brooks   indicated   only  seconds  before  the a/c   struck  the  mountainside,  that  he   was  concerned.    He  was  a  very experienced  airman  and  knew  what  safety  was all  about !

If you read Capt. Parata's article on the CVR you'll see how the Accident Investigator failed in his duty to follow accepted protocols when examining CVRs.  It is for this very reason that the wholesale release of CVR into the public arena needs to be avoided at all cost.  Only those that have specific training and expertise in this area should have access to CVRs (recorded data in general). This information is so easily misused by those without the skill and without proper supervision, and can't add anything constructive to the investigation process.  How many times do you see the media getting completely the wrong end of the stick...and reporting it?  Armchair experts voicing their uneducated opinions add little (and probably detract) from the investigation process.

Don't believe everything you read and hear!!

[PS the anonomous entry above is actually mine...had some teething problems with my account)
