It is said that everyone in New Zealand knew someone, or knew someone who knew someone, killed when an Air New Zealand Antarctic sightseeing flight crashed into Mt Erebus 30 years ago on Saturday. Picton sisters Susan O'Rourke and Melanie Fishburn have a closer connection than most - they lost their mother. They share their story for the first time.
Susan O'Rourke was watching television one night almost 30 years ago when she heard 10 words she has never forgotten – a plane is overdue from a sightseeing trip in Antarctica.

What happened to a vital piece of evidence in the Mt Erebus crash?
A Sunday investigation reveals that a police officer found a dairy belonging to the pilot of the plane in the wreckage, but years later the pages have mysteriously disappeared.

Thirty years after the tragedy, Air New Zealand has apologised for the first time to the families of those killed and among the crowd who gathered to witness the historic apology were two police officers who have spoken about how their lives have become intertwined with the disaster.

Nearly 30 years after an Air New Zealand jet slammed into Mt Erebus in Antarctica, killing all 257 on board, the airline has apologised to families of the dead this morning.
The Air New Zealand DC-10 was on a sightseeing flight when it hit the mountain November 28, 1979. The airline said today's apology was to take care of some of the "many of the gaps and failings that occurred in the days, months and years after November 28, 1979".

Thirty years after Captain Jim Collins died at Mt Erebus, his widow and four daughters are faced with having to decide which one of them will fly to the site of New Zealand's worst air disaster.
Air New Zealand has drawn a ballot to decide which five families of the 257 people who died in the Antarctica crash on November 28, 1979, will be represented at the memorial service on the 30th anniversary.
One seat had been allocated to the family of Mr Collins, but his daughter Kathryn Carter said they were yet to decide who would go.

The Erebus tragedy would never have happened if a Civil Aviation inspector, scheduled to be on board that day, had made the flight. That's the conviction of Maurice McGreal, a former pilot and Civil Aviation expert involved in the Erebus inquiry 30 years ago, and still acutely interested in what caused Flight 901 to smash into the bottom of the mountain on November 28,1979.

Air NZ to apologise to Erebus families

Air New Zealand will say sorry to the families of those killed in the Erebus disaster as part of the 30th anniversary commemorations. The apology will be the first to families of the 257 people who died when the airline's DC-10 crashed into Mt Erebus in Antarctica on November 28, 1979, during a sightseeing flight. It is understood chief executive Rob Fyfe will use the unveiling of a sculpture at the airline's head office in Auckland next Friday to apologise for the way the families were treated after the accident. But he would not go as far as apologising for the accident itself or the subsequent controversial investigations.

Air New Zealand will continue with plans to take five next-of-kin of those who died in the Erebus tragedy to Antarctica, despite objections from some family members. A proposal to take the families involved in the Erebus tragedy to Antarctica for the 30th anniversary on November 28 this year was put up for consultation last month.
In a decision released publicly yesterday, Air New Zealand said it had been in touch with families who expressed interest and had begun the process of formally applying to the Government for access to the memorial cross at Mt Erebus.

Air New Zealand has confirmed there will be room for only five relatives of victims of the Erebus air disaster to travel to Antarctica for the 30th anniversary, upsetting some who lost loved ones. The airline was criticised for its proposal to take only five family members when it first announced plans to commemorate New Zealand's worst air disaster. All 257 people on board Air NZ flight TE901 were killed when it slammed into Mt Erebus on November 28, 1979.
The airline said yesterday that after consultation, it had strong support for the small number of family representatives to fill the limited slots available on a United States Air Force C-17 cargo plane, and attend services at Mt Erebus and Scott Base.

Air New Zealand is defending its decision to send only five representatives of victims of the Erebus crash to Antarctica to commemorate the 30th anniversary of New Zealand's worst air disaster. Families of the 257 people killed in the November 28, 1979, crash have questioned why so few of them are being offered seats to Antarctica to mark the anniversary.

families back to the site is a publicity stunt. Alister Preston's 19-year-old son Robert was one
of the 257 on board the doomed Air New Zealand flight to Antarctica when it crashed on November
